Koanga are both a organic heritage seed saving organisation and a Permaculture Education centre based in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. Kay Baxter is very passionate about curbing the current trend of industrial food production (which strips out the nutrients) and is doing her bit by running Koanga.
Date: June 2014
The institute’s farm is on leased land and Baxter and her team had a few short months to raise the funds required to buy the land or risk losing years of heritage seed resources along with a thriving education system.
Baxter took the Koanga message on the road around NZ to fundraise and spread the word about Koanga’s unique work. The fundraising saved the precious resource. Meanwhile Outside were asked to help out by creating a short film to help during the campaign.
In addition to the film work I was working with Joel Salatin through Milkwood in the week before heading over to NZ. A nice addition to the campaign was having such revered voices in regenerative agriculture giving their appraisal towards Koanga and their fight.
